Visit of the Ambassador of Georgia to Wales - Newport

Ambassador of Georgia Tamar Beruchashvili is visiting Wales on June 20-21, 2017. This is the first official visit of the Ambassador of Georgia to Newport and Cardiff. The Embassy of Georgia closely worked with the representatives of the Welsh Government and Newport-Kutaisi Twinning Association to arrange the visit. 


Mayor of Kutaisi – twinned city of Newport since 2009 – Shota Murgulia and Member of the Kutaisi City Council David Tsitaishvili also participated in the meetings held in Newport on June 20.

The Ambassador and the Mayor visited the Newport City Council and held meetings with the Mayor of Newport, The Right Worshipful, Cllr David Fouweather and the Leader of the Council Cllr Debbie Wilcox. Chief Executive Officer Mr Will Godfrey and the Chair of the Newport Kutaisi Twinning Association Sonia Fisher and the former Chair Dame Rosemary Butler also attended the meeting. Dame Rosemary Butler was the Mayor of Newport and signed the Newport-Kutaisi twinning agreement in 1989. She was also the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales. She strongly contributed to the strengthening the ties between the two cities.

The aim of the meeting was to discuss the importance of cooperation between Newport and Kutaisi through twinning and to work for further enhancement of these strong ties. The Ambassador underlined the importance of the joint projects.

The guests also participated in the roundtable discussion dedicated to future of Newport-Kutaisi cooperation. The participants also included the representatives of the Newport City Council, University of South of Wales, Gôl! (Welsh football association) and Coleg Gwent. Main points for discussion were the success of existing joint projects, researching the potential for new projects and sharing the experience between the twinned cities.

Furthermore, the Ambassador had an opportunity to visit the Newport International Sports Village, where the parties discussed the possibility for arranging internship opportunities for Georgian citizens. Ms Beruchashvili also visited the Newport rugby club, as well as Kutaisi Walk and Friars Walk.

In conclusion of their visit to Newport, the guests were invited to the reception and dinner to celebrate the twinning between the two cities. The Ambassador addressed the audience.
