Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia

Welcome Speech

Dear reader,

Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Georgia to the UK.

The start of my posting coincided with two important dates for our nations – 25 years anniversary of Georgia’s regaining independence and 90th anniversary of her Majesty Elizabeth II birthday. And of course, “Brexit”, that makes me very sad.

As an Ambassador I primarily represent the interests of Georgia in the UK with the aim of widening and deepening relations and advancing bilateral cooperation at all levels as well as strengthening Britain’s support for Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration priorities.

Great Britain and Georgia have been developing genuinely close relations based on friendship and common values. The history of our diplomatic relations started in 1919, when a capable British diplomat Oliver Wardrop was assigned as the first British Chief Commissioner of Transcaucasus in Tbilisi.  In his honor in 2014 as a Foreign Minister, I had privilege to launch together with Minister for Europe David Lidington the Strategic annual platform – “Wardrop Dialogue” - to further intensify our bilateral cooperation.

Georgia is a country of old complex history, unique culture and young vibrant democracy. Currently 20% of our territory remains under foreign occupation and we are grateful to our friends and partners for their support.  Since regaining our independence the United Kingdom has been one of the devoted supporters of the Georgian independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations. We highly value the UK contribution to the ongoing process of democratic consolidation and economic transformation.

Today we are proud of being genuine and worthy partners in many areas of cooperation, such as  contributing peace and stability through NATO and other international missions; insuring European Energy security through  20-year cooperation with British Petroleum in transporting rich resources of the Caspian to Europe, promoting business-to-business cooperation and cultural and educational ties.

The Georgian Embassy is at the service of Georgian citizens residing in the UK.  We will do our outmost to ensure effective communication and provide useful information on this website, including with regard to consular services. We will regularly keep you informed about upcoming events at the Embassy, developments in Georgia and about our relations with the UK.
