On February 12, Chargé d’Affaires George Saganelidze delivered a speech at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of maritime transport between Georgia and the Republic of the Philippines at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Director of the Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia, Mr. Aleksi Akhvlediani, and the Maritime Administrator of the Republic of the Philippines, Ms. Sonia B. Malaluan.

The Memorandum outlines the exchange of the best practices in the maritime sector, the provision of technical assistance, exchange of information, and the implementation of joint projects to support the development of the maritime industry.

During the meeting, the parties discussed ongoing projects in the maritime sector between the two countries and explored opportunities for further strengthening the cooperation.

Notably, the Philippines is among the world’s top 10 shipbuilding nations, boasting extensive experience and a rich history in the industry. According to UN Trade and Development data from 2023, a total of 2,207 vessels sail under the Philippine maritime flag, with a combined deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 6 million. More than half of this maritime fleet (amounting to 3.5 million DWT) is owned by Philippine companies.
